Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Turbo was born in 2016, at the Police Dog Center in the Netherlands, and later joined the APOPO organization as a Mine Detection Dog in Cambodia. With energy in his name and in his paws, Turbo spent years working in one of Cambodia’s most heavily mined regions.
From June 4, 2017 to December 20, 2021, Turbo served in Preah Vihear Province, a remote and hazardous area bordering Thailand and Laos. His work involved both clearance and survey of active minefields, dangerous terrain where one wrong step could cost lives.
Fini’s career total includes:
Thanks to his sharp senses, he helped clear more than 902,300 square meters of land, restoring safety to rural communities, agricultural fields, and forests once laced with hidden dangers.
Turbo officially retired on January 1, 2022, and joined Home of Heroes. He has since been lovingly cared for by a dedicated Guardian, under the ongoing supervision of the HOH team.
Despite his intense working past, Turbo is known at the sanctuary for his gentle demeanor and loyal personality. He’s thoughtful, observant, and deeply bonded to those who care for him. He radiates the quiet strength of a hero finally at peace.
Turbo reminds us that bravery doesn’t have to be loud, it just has to be real.
