Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Shelby was born in Cambodia in 2018, but her early years were marked by uncertainty. She was staying with an irresponsible owner for the first years of her life. In May 2022, fate intervened. Tourists witnessed her being traded on the streets and took immediate action. Thanks to their courage and compassion, Shelby was rescued and brought to the safety of Animal Mama Veterinary Hospital, where she got treatment and later was transferred to Home of Heroes.
Though she never served in the field like many of her fellow canines at Home of Heroes, Shelby’s story is no less heroic. She went through the training with the handler at Home of Heroes, showing incredible obedience! Her life was once headed toward tragedy, but now, she represents resilience, recovery, and the profound value of every life saved.
Today, she enjoys her days in peace, comfort, and love,a joyful reminder that not all heroes wear harnesses.She was saved from harm. Now she helps heal hearts. Shelby is our reminder that every soul is worth saving.
