Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Max was born on February 20, 2019, in South Africa and was brought to Cambodia to begin his training in specialized service work. In April 2020, he joined the Animal Mama Dog Training programme in Siem Reap, where he trained in Basic Security and Tracking.
Although Max didn’t go on to serve in active duty, his heart was always in the right place. He officially joined Home of Heroes and has been a beloved part of the centre ever since.
Max is known for his intelligence and dignity. Highly obedient, smart and loyal boy. While his path didn’t lead him into the field, he now plays a vital role as an ambassador of blood donation for other dogs in need and educational programs for handlers. Max reminds us that every dog, no matter their service record, deserves love, rest, and respect.
At Home of Heroes, Max has found his true mission: to live his best life surrounded by care and compassion.
