Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Karuna was born in 2017, in Cambodia and began her journey as a Mine Detection Dog with the Cambodia Mine Action Center (CMAC). She started basic puppy training at CMAC’s facilities in Kampong Chhnang Province but her path took a different turn.
During her early development, Karuna was diagnosed with a severe pancreatic deficiency disorder, making it impossible for her to continue training or ever be deployed to the field. She was brought in to be euthanized but fate and compassion had other plans.
The veterinary team at Animal Mama, led by Yulia Khouri, intervened. They not only saved her life but provided the medical care and nutritional support needed to stabilize her condition. Since December 1, 2017, Karuna is living a safe, joyful, and fully medically managed life in Yulia’s own home.
Gentle, sensitive, and deeply bonded to her humans, Karuna has never worked a day in the field but she is no less of a hero. Her story is a testament to second chances and the core belief of Home of Heroes: every dog’s life matters. Every dog deserves love.
Karuna reminds us that not all heroes wear harnesses: some simply teach us how to care more deeply and fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.
Every dog deserves a safe and loving home. This page highlights important details about the dog, including their background, personality, and special care requirements.
