Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Julex was born in 2015, in Bosnia and trained at the Global Training Centre (GTC) before joining the elite ranks of Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA). With natural focus and a nose for danger, he went on to serve as a dedicated Mine Detection Dog in Cambodia.
From 2020 to 2024, Julex operated in the Ratanakiri Province of northeastern Cambodia, one of the most heavily contaminated regions due to unexploded cluster munitions. Working daily in challenging field conditions, he helped transform dangerous land into safe ground for children, farmers, and entire villages.
Over the course of his career:
Julex officially retired on April 1, 2024, and arrived at Home of Heroes where he now enjoys the peace and dignity every hero deserves.
Quiet, observant, and deeply connected to his environment, Julex is the kind of dog who says everything with his eyes. There’s strength in his stillness and wisdom in his presence, a reflection of the years he spent doing critical, dangerous work.
Julex is not only a skilled former working dog. He’s a living symbol of courage, resilience, and the mission at the heart of Home of Heroes.
