Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Essen was born in April, 2018, in Cambodia, part of a litter raised at the NPA training center in Siem Reap. He was enrolled in the Basic Mine Detection Dog program under Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), where he began his early education in mine detection.
Although Essen showed potential, he did not move on to active operational duty. In February 2019, he was officially retired and just a few months later he joined Home of Heroes, where even the youngest dogs who didn’t go to the frontlines find a forever home.
Essen lives a joyful and peaceful life surrounded by other canine heroes. His playful nature and gentle soul make him a favorite among visitors and staff. While he may not have cleared land or detected mines, his presence is a powerful reminder that every dog deserves safety, love, and a second chance.
