Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Denzel was born on September 23, 2015, at the renowned Police Dog Center in Holland. With strength, focus, and an exceptional nose, he was brought to Cambodia where he underwent specialized training at the Dog Training Center (DTC) in Siem Reap under the Norway People’s Aid (NPA) mission.
His journey as an Explosive Detection Dog began in June 2016, working in Cambodia’s most heavily affected regions. Between 2016 and 2019, he operated under NPA’s Mine Action Center in Siem Reap, helping train and guide demining efforts across multiple provinces. From 2020 to early 2022, he continued his mission in Ratanakiri Province.
Though Denzel did not engage in operational land clearance himself, his role in the program was vital in supporting and refining the training systems for other mine detection dogs.
Denzel retired in January 2022 and joined Home of Heroes on May 6, 2022, where he now enjoys his peaceful days, surrounded by care and dignity.
Confident, loyal, and calm, Denzel remains a living symbol of strength and purpose. His legacy may not be marked in land cleared or munitions found, but in the silent guidance he gave to others, and the lives he helped prepare for service.
