Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Nergard was born in Bosnia in 2007 and trained at the Global Training Centre before joining Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) in Cambodia. With keen intelligence and dedication, he served bravely in one of the world’s most dangerous jobs: locating hidden explosives buried across Southeast Asia’s post-war landscapes.
Nergard’s operational work began in the fields of Ratanakiri Province, northeastern Cambodia. Between 2015 and 2017, he helped detect and clear 78 deadly unexploded munitions, making over 177,000 square meters of land safe for local communities.
From 2017 to 2019, Nergard served in a different way: at the NPA Explosive Detection Dog Show in Siem Reap. There, he helped raise awareness about the role of demining dogs in making Cambodia safer, inspiring both international visitors and local schoolchildren.
Nergard retired from field work in June 2017 and officially joined Home of Heroes in 2018. He lived out his final years in peace and comfort at the home of the founder, Yulia Khouri, who became his guardian and closest companion. He passed away on January 5, 2022.
A seasoned veteran and gentle soul, Nergard’s story is one of resilience, redemption, and devotion. He spent his life clearing the path for others so they could walk without fear.
Now, his memory walks with us.
