Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs

Murielle was born in 2006, in Bosnia and trained to serve with the Cambodia Mine Action Center (CMAC). She was not only one of the most versatile working dogs of her time, but also the first-ever dog to inspire the creation of Home of Heroes.
From 2008 to 2016, Murielle served in Cambodia’s most mine-affected regions, including Samlout, Bavel, and Banan districts of Battambang Province, where she worked tirelessly to detect landmines and UXO buried beneath fields and footpaths.
She located:
helping ensure safety during high-risk events and official operations.
In addition to fieldwork, Murielle was also deployed for government security assignments between 2012 and 2016, where she checked:
541 VIP locations
Murielle officially retired on October 24, 2016, and joined Home of Heroes in 2018. She was adopted and cared for by Founder Yulia Khouri, who later made Murielle the heart and soul of what would become the first retirement sanctuary for demining dogs in the world.
Murielle passed away on March 16, 2022, but her legacy continues every day in the lives of the dogs she paved the way for.
Soft, wise, and deeply intuitive, Murielle was more than a working dog, she was the beginning of a movement. Without her, there would be no Home of Heroes. She was the one who showed us that every hero deserves peace, dignity, and love after service.
Murielle, our inspiration.
