Home of Heroes: A Sanctuary for Retired Working Dogs
Home of Heroes is the world’s first sanctuary dedicated to providing retired working dogs, especially demining K9 veterans, with the dignity, care, and love they deserve after a life of courageous service.
Founded in 2017 by Yulia Khouri and inspired by the heroic journey of a demining dog named Muriel, Home of Heroes rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who once served on the frontlines of landmine detection and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance. These brave souls have saved countless human and animal lives, and now it’s our turn to serve them.

About Dog
Fini was born on January 1, 2007, in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and trained at the Global Training Centre (GTC) to become one of the most accomplished and beloved Mine Detection Dogs in the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) program. Over the course of her exceptional career, Fini not only served in the field across multiple countries but also became a foundational mother in the NPA breeding program, giving birth to multiple generations of hero dogs.
Fini’s international service began in June 2015 in Da Lak Province, Vietnam, where she performed clearance and survey missions along the Cambodia – Vietnam border. She continued her work in Phou Paksong, Laos in late 2015, before returning to Cambodia to focus on CBU/BLU fields in Ratanakiri Province.
Between 2015 and 2016, she cleared a significant amount of contaminated land, and later transitioned to serve in the NPA Explosive Detection Dog Show in Siem Reap from August 2018 to May 2019, helping to educate the public and raise awareness of the vital work these dogs perform.
Fini’s career total includes:
Beyond her fieldwork, Fini also played a critical role in securing the future of NPA’s detection dog program. She had three litters:
Fini officially retired on January 5, 2019, and entered Home of Heroes later that year on December 15, 2019, where she lived out her golden years in love and comfort under the watch of Founder Yulia Khouri, her official guardian.
Fini passed away peacefully on January 5, 2022.
She was known for her noble spirit, gentle temperament, and the deep intelligence that guided both her work and her role as a mother. Her legacy continues through the lives of her children, her service, and the home built in her honor.
Fini, our matriarch.
Forever in our hearts, forever a hero.
